Christchurch and Canterbury
If it is variety you want, Canterbury has it all. Natural areas range from the
mountains and tussock grasslands, to beech and forests, braided rivers, lakes
and vast coastal wetlands.
Between the mountains and the sea, the vast plains are patch worked with the
patterns of rural life. In the two cities of the region, Christchurch and
Timaru, great care has been taken to preserve Canterbury’s colonial heritage.
Grand architecture, historic homesteads and immaculate parks intersperse with
the technology and style of modern life. The South Island’s largest city,
Christchurch, is an entertaining mixture of refined lifestyle and cultural
excitement. The so called “Garden City,” is filled with beautiful parks and
other attractions, like the International Antarctic Centre, punting on the Avon,
hot air ballooning and wine tasting.

Arthur’s Pass – East meets
West
Arthur's Pass is the result of a road pushed through
the mountains of the South Island by gold rush
fever. Only one shipment of gold was ever carried
along it, but it opened up the treasure of the
mountains and their forested valleys to everyone.
The Arthur’s Pass National Park offers a wide
variety of tracks and routes for all levels of
experience, fitness and ability. Walking along those
tracks you can explore a great range of ecosystems
and vegetation Arthur’s Pass has to offer.
The west side has wet, dense rainforest while the
drier, colder east side has predominantly mountain
beech forest and grasslands of tussock. |
