Coromandel and The Bay of Plenty
Dramatic landmarks and a unique thermal beach with hot water bubbling up from
deep in the earth are just some of the many surprises that await you on this
coastline of contrasts.
The peninsula divides the Hauraki Gulf from the Bay of Plenty. The east coast
provides sheltered golden to white-sand beaches and sheltered coves while on the
wild west coast, cliffs drop to the sea seeming to cling to land only by the
Pohutakawa trees. Although sparsely populated, the region is ideal for
independent travellers who enjoy the great outdoors. The abundant coast line
provides ideal sites for boating, fishing, surfcasting and swimming in a
temperate climate. Inland, the Coromandel Range is perfect for hiking, horse
trekking and hunting for introduced wild pig.

Bay of Plenty - Fruit
basket of NZ
In a great arc from the Coromandel Peninsula to the
East Cape, this is an historic and scenic bay,
backed by forested mountain ranges and kiwi and
citrus orchards.
To the west lies the bustling port of Tauranga,
whose visitor attractions include a splendid war
canoe and Historic Village, a delightful city of
parks, beaches, lively bars and restaurants. |

Sun stop at the Cathedral
Cove
A 20 minute walk, or a guided kayaking trip, will
bring you to the white sands and arches of Cathedral
Cove.
It is an idyllic place to swim, snorkel, and picnic
or simply relax under the Pohutukawa trees. |

Hot Water Beach
For two hours either side of low tide, you can
create your own hot pool by digging into the sands.
The hot spring bubbling up through the sand is due
to the exciting volcanic past of the Coromandel
Peninsula.
This beach is as good as its name, so make sure
you’re early in as it can get cramped in summer!
