Dunedin, Southland and Stewart Island
The southeast of the South Island is not the warmest corner of the country, nor
is it surrounded by the highest mountains but it is here where
every visitor can enjoy small-town hospitality and unforgettable eco-activities.
The Otago coast stretches from the Waitaki River north of Oamaru to the mighty
Clutha River south of Dunedin.
The main centre of the region is Dunedin, an elegant city with close links to
the Scottish heritage. Boosted by riches from the 1861 gold rush, the city grew
from an isolated outpost to a bastion of European culture.
North and south of the city, the jagged coast is peppered with bizarre
geological formations, sheltered sandy bays and sheer cliffs full of vibrant
wildlife.

Oamaru eye to eye with
the penguins
This coastal town north of Dunedin is famous for its
white limestone, used in many of the architectural
gems of the region.
Aside from the attractions of the town itself,
within walking distance visitors can observe both
yellow-eyed and blue penguins at their respective
colonies.
Driving south to Dunedin, take a stop and marvel at
the perfect roundness of the mysterious Moeraki
boulders, lying partly embedded on a beautiful sandy
beach. |

Stewart Island spot the
rare Kiwi
Stewart Island is New Zealands third largest island
but is often over-looked allowing it to remain a
largely unspoilt wilderness of rainforest, beaches
and a vast range of bird-life.
From Bluff, home of the Bluff Oyster, visitors may
